Declan Murphy is a Wicklow-based author. Wicklow is often referred to as 'The Garden of Ireland', and has a lot to offer to anyone interested in nature.
Declan's first book, A Life in the Trees
, (2017), follows the lives of Great Spotted Woodpeckers as they strive to colonize Ireland for the first time.
His second book, The Spirit of the River
(2021), follows the lives of a family of Kingfishers.
Both books are set along the banks of the Avonmore river near the picturesque and world famous Glendalough valley in The Wicklow Mountains National Park. Each is a partial memoir and explores the natural world around us throughout Declan's life as well as the present. Declan
has enjoyed the flora and fauna of Wicklow since he was a boy; from its stony beaches, that offer a home to Ireland's endangered Little Terns, to the oak woods in the Wicklow Mountains, which provide a habitat for the Great Spotted Woodpecker.
Declan is equally at home watching a fox hunting a rabbit as listening to the dawn chorus unfolding across the glens of Wicklow. He has a wonderful ability to express his enthusiasm through his writing
and his presentations
